CHILD SAFETY CAR SEATS

An appropriate child restraint is one which
1:  Conforms to the United Nations ECE Regulation standard  44_03
2: Is suitable for child’s Weight and size
3: Is correctly fitted according to manufacturers instructions
Child restraints are divided into categories, according to the weight of the child

Stage 1 = groups 0 and 0+ Rearward facing Baby seat   up to 10kg  (22 lbs) roughly from birth to 9 mths
Stage 2 =  group 1 Forward facing child seat 9-18 kgs ( 20_40lbs) roughly from 9mths to 4 years
Stage 3 =  group 2  booster seat  15- 25kgs (33-55 lbs) roughly  4 to 6 years
Stage 4 =  group 3  booster cushion  22-36 kgs  (48-79lbs)

THE LAW


Children under 3 years old MUST use a child restraint appropriate for their weight and age.(the adult seat belt in not sufficient)
Rearward facing seat belts are designed to be fitted in the rear as well as the front.
You should ALWAYS put a rearward-facing baby seat in the rear if front passenger airbag is fitted.
It is advisable always to seat children in the rear seat if possible.
Children aged between 3 and 11 years and under 1.5 metres MUST always wear an appropriate child restraint or adult seat belts with a ‘Booster seat’.

As a driver, if you are convicted of failing to ensure that a child passenger is wearing a seat belt or child restraint can face a heavy fine and could also affect any claims against your motor insurance.
The most serious penalty of all could be that of loss of life.
